Abstract:
Ancient Greek drama appears for the first time in the theatrical demands of modern Greece in the beginning of 19th century, especially on the eve of 1821 Revolution. At that time its approach concurred to the preparation of national awakening, by the idea that ancient Greece is the beginning of the historical continuity of Hellenism. In the second half of 19th century there is a movement for the regeneration of the Greek community. The Greek theatre is reborn within its frame. One of its activities was the cultivation of ancient Greek drama, in several aspects: a) in education by teaching the ancient tragic poets, b) in the professional theatre by public performances, c) in the associations by amateur productions, public lessons and lectures, in order to initiate the broad public to ancient drama and d) in the literary and philological section by publishing modern Greek translations of ancient Greek plays, literary criticism and analysis.
