Abstract:
The year 1894 is a landmark for the developmenth of modern Greek theatre. In this year a new theatrical species destined to occupy a special position, the Athens Revue, was introduced. In the beginning of that year’s season things seemed to be as usual. The instigation for a change was given by an Italian opera group, which, in mid-April played for the first time in Athens, the latest musical hit in European theatres, the Spanish revue «Grand Via» [=big street]. The Athens audience got thrilled by its light, gay music, its songs, its satire, its glamorous costumes and beautiful girls. This Spanish revue had the destiny of all plays which for some reason have a great success and the groups repeat it until a new play of the same kind appears and becomes the rage, while the previous one is not totally forgotten. We must search for the contribution of «Grand Via» to the development of Greek theatre, which differentiates it from other plays of the repertories of foreign groups, in its absorbtion into Greek plays.
