The construction of a country road on the top of the hill Castello on Kos led to the discovery of a rock - cut myce- naean chamber tomb, which is the first evidence of a, hitherto unknown, Mycenaean settlement in the area.In the interior of the well preserved tomb the bones of the dead and the grave offerings were brushed aside to the SE corner of the chamber. No final burial in situ was found. This particular practice has already been noticed in the mycenaean cemeteries but is not yet definetely explained. It has been recentlysuggested that a second burial custom has actually taken place but the question still remains open. The finds consist of ( 1 ) a kylix with a cuttlefish decoration, common at Ialysos on Rhodes and on Kos itself. ( 2 ) A deep bowl of group A and (3) a base fragment of a small globular stirrup jar. The kylix gives further evidence to the close contacts between Rhodes and Cos and to the existence of a workshop in the Dodecanese producing stemmed cups decorated with octopuses during the LH IIIB period.
