Two new grave stelae came to light in the neighbourhood of Larisa in 1978. The first one, shown in figs. 1-2, found at Rhodia, presumed site of the ancient city Kondaea, has a rare and tender representation ; a mother giving suckle to her baby. As far as I know,there is one example of suckling in sculpture, in the Syracusae Museum, where a mother is giving suckle to her twin babies. Suckling representations exist also in two South Italian vases and three mirrors, illustrating the myth of Hera and Hercules. The stele conserves a small part of the epigram and is dated in the fourth quarter of the 5th century B.C.The second stele, figs. 3-4, was found at magoula Kastri, near Tyrna- vos, where probably is situated the ancient city Phalanna. It is related withthe Thessalian stele of Polyxena ( Nat. Mus. 733 ) and has many constructive similarities with the stele from Rhodia, so that one can suppose the same workshop for both of them. This stele from Kastri is dated in the third quarter of the 5th century B. C.
