Abstract:
Last year we excavated at 110 De- metrakopoulos street the property of E. Sarras. We found there a great number of tombs which are a part of the cemetery situated at a distance from the walls of the city of Athens on the way to Phaleron. The existence of a big cemetery in this place is already known from previous excavations. The excavated tombs are dated from LH II to the end of the classical period. We discovered two Chamber Tombs (Nos. Ill and XV) (plan 1 ). Chamber Tomb III had been used for a long while. The pottery found in it, without any order, in small cists, and on the floor of the chamber (fig.1 ), is dated to the LH II-LH III C period ( fi g s. 2 - 6 ).Chamber Tomb XV, well preserved, is dated to the LH III A: 1 - LH III A: 2 period (figs. 7-8).Middle Submycenaean was Grave I ; Late Protogeometric Graves IX and XVII (figs. 9-10).The pyre A is dated to the transitional period from the Protogeometric to the Geometric period ( s. fig. 11 ).A group of graves of the Late Geometric period was excavated on the South Side of the area ( f i g s. 12-13).The classical graves and pyres were found near Chamber Tomb XV ( s. fi g. 14).Some pottery of the classical period was found in the fill of the graves. They belonged probably to graves destroyed by ancient construction.
