News of the activities of the 1st arcaelogical ephorate

In addition to the work of preservation on the Acropolis monuments the 1st Archaeological Ephorate undertook last year extensive work on the North slope of the Acropolis with the view of reconstituting the ancient Pe- ripatos which in ancient days went along the foot of the rock encircling it (figs. 1 - 5 ). The work included the cleaning away of masses of earth, the construction of supporting walls, some repairs on the monuments e.g. the courtyard of the so-called Pythion, and limited excavation.Cleaning work and the pulling down of old houses and walls were also undertaken in the Library of Hadrian, the E. part of which presents now a thoroughly different and orderly aspect (figs. 6 - 7 ).
