Έξω φρενών : a Greek theatre “revue”in Constantinople

The article presents theatre activity, the cultural and the political milieu of the Greek community of Constantinople in the first decade of the 20th century following the evidence offered from the performance of a theatre “revue” written especially to be presented to the Greek public of the town by the important touring company of K. Sayor and D. Veronis in 1908. The “revue” entitled Out of Mind (Έξω φρενών) was announced as «byzantine» (i.e. constantinopolite) contrary to the common tradition insisting on the fact that the genre was considered as «athenian». Out of Mind was considered as a major event following the relevant press releases and critics, commented by the author of the article, but finally did not meet the big success it was intended to. Nevertheless this performance, that created violent articles in the local press, permits to understand and elucidate specific aspects of the theatre activity addressed to the Greek community of Constantinople.
