The tree in the mythological representations of the Attic black figure vases and early Attic red figure vases (570-460 B.C.)

The aim of this paper is to examine and analyse the way trees are represented in the Attic black figure vases and Attic red figure vases.The novelty brought about by the black-figured style is the fact that the tree became an important element in the representations of mythological themes. For example, in most of the scenes depicting one or the other of the labours of Hercules or Theseus one finds an olive tree, symbol of Athena, guardian goddess of both heroes, which fills up the empty space behind the figures. The olive tree is endowed with a functional role, since its branches are used to hang the garments and arms of often naked heroes, an element that makes the identification of characters easier.Other trees represented are the laurel, the palm-tree, the pine-tree, the plane-tree, the climbing vine and the willow-tree. Some other trees, bearing large fruits, cannot be identified. The tree of the Hesperides is not represented in any particular manner, but in several, often not naturalistic ways.The role of the tree in Attic vase painting begins to change around 460 B.C, when larger vases become in vogue and the thematic repertoire of artists shifts to other representations.For more than a hundred years the Attic vase painters did not use more that eight or nine types of trees, managing non-the-less to represent a large number of myths.

Για τη βοήθεια τους σε θέματα που προέκυπταν στην πορεία της εργασίας της ευχαριστεί μεταξύ άλλων τον καθηγητή Μ. Τιβέριο και την επικ. καθηγήτρια Μπ. Σμιτ-Δούνα. Ευχαριστίες οφείλει στα Μουσεία του Λούβρου και του Μονάχου (Staatl. Antikensammlungen u. Glyptothek) για την άδεια δημοσίευσης των φωτογραφιών. Η συλλογή του υλικού έγινε κυρίως από το CVA με μόνη επιλογή την παρουσία δένδρων στις μυθολογικές παραστάσεις των αγγείων. Η όποια ποσοτική ανισότητα ανάμεσα στα αγγεία των εκάστοτε περιόδων ή στα διάφορα θέματα οφείλεται στο ίδιο το υλικό. Η τεχνοτροπική και χρονολογική ανάλυση των παραστάσεων δεν περιλαμβάνεται στους στόχους αυτής της εργασίας. Λόγω της διάρθρωσης της εργασίας η χρονολογική σειρά των παραστάσεων τηρείται μόνο μέσα στα πλαίσια του κάθε επιμέρους θέματος., Περιέχει εικόνες, πίνακα συντομογραφιών και βιβλιογραφία
