Digging operations for the opening of a drainage trench near the Pump Station of the Hellenic Water Company, to the right of the Marathon - Kato Suli road, revealed a prehistoric settlement, which had been inundated by the water of Mega Helos, before the draining of this swamp. The settlement probably extended over an area corresponding to a low and elongated elevation of the ground, measuring approximately 150 m. in length and 100 m. in width, and having a N.E. - S.W. orientation. The shortest distance of the elevation from the spring Mati Palaia Sterna is 50 - 80 m. and from the spring Megaio Mati at the beginning of the drainage trench, by the Marathon - Kato Suli road, the distance is about 200 m. Evidently, the spring Mati Palaia Sterna is the same with that marked by E. Curtius and J. A. Kaupert, Karten von Attika, Blatt XVIII, as Sterna ( the ancient Makaria ). The trench, over 2 m. deep and about 5 m. wide, has been opened in the direction of the S.W. section of the settlement.Remains of a room whose floor is possibly covered with small unworked stones (fig. 3, see also figs. 1 and 2 ), are visible on the left - hand side of the trench. Finds collected from the surface of the removed earth include obsidian blades, a late Neolithic sherd from a deep phiale (fig. 4, a ) and Early Helladic sherds from vases of customary shape, in particular sauce - boats, of excellent quality (figs. 4-11). The pre-historic enclosure seen on the hill nearby belongs to the settlement.The sherds of the upper layers have remained unknown, as the fill has not been investigated. The settlement was abandoned early, following the formation of the swamp of Mega Helos ( Herod. VI 113 and Paus. I 32, 7 ).
