The poetics of seduction in the work of Demetrius Galanis

The paper starts with a theoretical discussion concerning issues of the critical reception of the nude. I detect a chain of demarcations that try to separate the field between art and pornography. I point out the insufficiency of this kind of demarcations since there is no possible reception from the spectator’s part that can be avoided. During his long career Demetrius Galanis (1879-1966) has explored systematically the representation of the nude. Here I focus on a series of four drawings executed in the 40’s. They represent “Madame Recamier laid bare” and they belong to the Tsamis collection (Tellogleion Foundation of Art, Thessaloniki). I start by investigating the pictorial poetics used here in order to render the nude provocative and then i examine issues related to the reception of Galanis’s nudes by the critics.
