Generally the Gymnasium of Kyno- sarges is placed South of the Olympi- eion on the left bank of the Ilissos; the accurate position, however, is in doubt, because some support the theory that it was found to the East of the church of Ag. Pandeleimon and others that it was to the West.On these points not only the preserved philological evidence but also the ruins discovered from time to time and the removable objects leave no doubt that the Kynosarges must be sought to the East of Ag. Pandeleimon, in the area which extends as far as the church of Ag. Photeine.On this site in the year 1896/7 two large buildings, Gymnasia, were excavated by the British School of Archaeology, of which the one of RomanΠΡΟΪΣΤΟΡΙΚΗ ΑΚΡΟΠΟΛΙΣ EN ΜΑΡΑΘΩΝΙΕίς τυχαΐον εύρημα οφείλεται ή έπι- σήμανσις παρά του καθηγητοϋ Μαρινάτου προϊστορικού συνοικισμού εις τήν παραλίαν του πεδίου τοϋ Μαραθώ- νος.Κατά τήν δρυξιν άβαθοϋς φρέατος έν θέσει Πλάσι, περί τα 1.200 μ. προς Α. τοϋ Τύμβου, άνευρέθησαν εις βάθος 3 μ. περίπου άρίστης ποιότητος ΥΕΙΙΙΑ-Β όστρακα, τά όποια θά εμενον απαρατήρητα,date (plan 1, 16) was identifiedwith the one mentioned by Pausanias as the Gymnasium of Hadrian.Unfortunately the plans of the building produced then by the English are definitely lacking, but from the meagre information which C. Smith, director of the excavations, has given us in his report, it has been successfully recognized through their coming to light again during the course of the excavations of Miss Olga Alexandri in 1969 (plan 2 ).The problem concerns a large building of the time of Hadrian the completion of the ground plan of which, by the extension of the excavations, will make possible the verification of its purpose and its safe identification.
