Abstract:
Reappraisal of various fragments kept in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes has provided new information on the tombs of grand masters buried in the conventual church of St John of the Collachio. The fragments include: i) Inv. no. Φ166α-γ, possibly fragments of the sarcophagus of Hélion de Villeneuve (1319-1346) preserving the lower part of shields with the arms of the master and the Order between relief colonnettes raised on steps, ii) Inv. no. Φ176α-β, fragments of the sarcophagus of Roger de Pins (1355-1365) with personal arms supported by crouching animals and flanked by pine trees, iii) Inv. no. Φ114, fragment of lid from the sarcophagusof Roger de Pins preserving part of the pillow supporting the head of the effigy flanked by the pine badge and part of the colonnette from the relief canopy of the effigy, iv) Inv. no. Φ152, fragment of lid from the sarcophagus of Giovanni Battista degli Orsini (1467- 1476), preserving the right side of the relief canopy of the effigy, with the master’s arms. Current evidence indicates that the burial of grand masters in stone sarcophagi with effigies on the lid was the norm on Rhodes, and that only the masters and one or two great western nobles who happened to die on Rhodes, were held to merit the dignity of such a tomb.
