Abstract:
To the clay plaque from Perati, which, together with a similar, though fragmentary plaque from Mycenae, was a rare find, has recently been added a new object of this type from the Mycenaean cemetery at Glyka Nera, also in Attica. This plaque has holes pierced through the width, whereas the holes in the Perati plaque were at one end, through the thickness; its two large surfaces were decorated with two goats shown in movement, and the narrow sides with common Mycenaean motifsof seashells and spirals. It is dated on the basis of the decorative motifs to LH IIIA2/LHIIIB.Two objects from the Mycenaean fill of the Sanctuary of Aphaia on Aigina probably belong to the group of plaques just mentioned, though they may have had a different use.Unfortunately, the existing indications of the finding of these objects do not assist in the interpretation of their use, and the suggestion that they may have been children’s toys is therefore purely hypothetical.
