A cemetery of the classical period at Ayia Eleousa, Palaiopolis, Andros

At a short distance from the modem village of Palaiopolis on ancient Andros a rescue excavation, was conducted by the archaeologist Dr. Chr. Televantou. Part of a cemetery dating to the Classical period was unearthed. Several of the eight cist and pit graves contained no offerings. Of some interest are the black-glazed kylikes with impressed decoration nos. 1150 (grave 2), 1144 (grave 7), two lekythoi nos. 1148 (grave 6), 1149 (out of context) and the jointed doll no. 1147 holding aset of castanets (grave 7). The excavation in the area between the graves has yielded some information concerning the care of the deceased by their relatives. Vertical and horizontal slabs are interpreted as structures for the completion of sepulchral rites, the so-called perideipnon, while traces of fire noticed in and around graves 1,2 and 7 are attributed to the same function. The graves are considered to belong to a restricted settlement, whose inhabitants exploited the neighbouring bay.
