A survey was conducted in the Argolid in 2003 to test a predictive Mesolithic (ca. 10,500 to 9,000 B.P.) site-location model. The coastal region around Kandia was selected because the present shoreline is near to the position of the early Holocene shoreline. The marine transgression which brought the shoreline to near its present position by 9,000 B.P. flooded low- lying areas creating a dynamic system of estuaries, lagoons, and marshes fed by springs and rivers. Mesolithic sites were predicted to be associated with these wetlands and located in caves or rockshelters that provided optimal access to both aquatic and terrestrial resources in the coastal zone. Caves and rockshelters weresearched in an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and the survey recorded 21 sites with 1,713 associated lithic artifacts. Fifteen sites have microlithic assemblages of Mesolithic type. The sites had access to lithic resources and a mosaic of plant and animal resources supported by the complex topographic relief of the coastal hinterland. The Kandia site-preference model will be useful for constructing research designs for the detection of Mesolithic sites where similar environmental conditions existed in the early Holocene. The Kandia survey contributed important new evidence to a poorly known period of Greek prehistory.
