Abstract:
During public works on Aghii Theo- dori street in Kerkyra, 150 m NE of the Artemis sanctuary a small classical altar was found (fig. 1, plan 1, 2) in 1973.In order to find the corresponding temple, in 1979 a trial excavation was held in the plot of Mrs Tzavalos - Poli- tis, 11 m west of the altar. A big rectangular building, probably the cella of atemple ( diam. 6,50 x 13,50 m ) was located and partly unearthed. The finds were : a few miniaturevases of the well - known type from poor sanctuaries of the 6th and 5th c. B. C. (figs. 7,8), small objects (fig. 9), many blackware - sherds ( of the 5th c.B.G. ), fragments of tiles (figs. 4-6, 10), some of them inscribed with ar- chonts names, and 79 bronze and silver coins dated from the 4th c. B. C. - 2nd c. A. D.The building of the temple can be dated in the 2nd half of the 5th c. B. C.The problem is to which divinity this temple was dedicated, because up to now there is no litterary or inscriptio- nal evidence about it. But this find corroboratesRhomaios’ suggestion about the existance of sanctuary of Apollo Pythaios near the great Artemis ( Gorgo ) sanctuary, after his interpretation of the inscription ΡΟΟΣ ΠΥΘΑΙΟΣ (IG IX, 1, 699, BCH 1925, 21 lfT, fig. 5 ).
