Abstract:
The intensive survey of the Langadas basin continued for a second period on a larger scale in 1987. The aims and methods which have been described in the report for the 1986 season (Kotsakis 1987) remained the same. Field walking was concentrated in the northern edge of the basin and the surrounding hills, in an area which is dominated by the three known prehistoric sites of Assiros, Drymos and Krithia. An area of some 14.5 klm was covered ranging in height a.s.l. from 150 m. to 500 m. The terrain was of varying roughness belonging to different geological zones and equally variable was the vegetation. Twenty two sites of interest were found. Of these 1 belonged to the Late Neolithic, 1 to the Early Bronze Age, 4 to the Late Bronze Age, to the Iron Age, 1 to the Classical period, 4 to the Hellenistic, to the Roman, 4 to Byzantine and 8 to the Ottoman period. Some interesting points regarding the changing relationship between settlement and environment seem to emerge with a concentration of the earliest and the latest sites in the lower parts of the area while during the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age sites expand to higher grounds. All the sites found, except four, are flat but none of the latter belong to the Late Bronze Age. Finally the two largest sites belong one to the Late Neolithic (450.000 m.2) and the other to the Byzantine period.
