Abstract:
The Department of Speleology has undertaken since 1992 an archaeological excavation in the Cave of Lakes, near Kalavryta. The excavation has revealed Late and Middle Helladic deposits containing human skeletal remains in the interior — seven individuals were found packed into a niche — and a thin Early Helladic layer over the Late Neolithic II living floors alternating with thick mud deposits. Further excavation at the entrance yielded only LN II floors, an intact burial and a few architectural remains. The neolithic ware consistsmainly of coarse pithoids with broad vertical handles, horizontal lugs, roped patterns and plastic zones, or open bowls with a thin incised decoration unique to Kastria. In LN II, the cave is likely to have served as a storing place for a small populace living outside it and based on a simple agricultural and cattle-breeding economy. Moreover, an important open air site was located not far from the cave, on the hill Kastro, where remains of all periods — LN and Bronze Age included — were collected.
