Geraki : restoration of wall-paintings

During the work of strengthening and cleaning the wall-paintings of the churches at the village and the Castle of Geraki - Laconia (figs. 1 - 2 ), important frescoes previously unknown (fig. 3 ) were discovered. In the church of Evangelistria (figs. 4-5) under the 18th cent, decoration of the Iconostasis (figs. 6 - 7 ), was discovered the older fresco ( c. 13th cent. ) depicting the Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin with the Child and Saint George and Saint Panteleimon (figs. 8 - 9 ).In the Church of Saint Athanasios, however, under the later plaster, frescoes have appeared belonging to the Byzantine era, which cover the apse of the sanctuary, pilasters, and the North and South wall (figs. 10- 12 ).
