This article presents some examples of ‘West Slope’ pottery from the area of the ancient agora in Thessaloniki (from excavations conducted during the period 1992-1995 by the ΙΣΤ' Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities).The total number of finds of this category of pottery exceeds two thousand fragments, of which only a small part is examined here. The selection of the particular fragments and pieces of pots in this category was made on the basis of criteria relating, where possible to the complete shape, or the shape restored after conservation. The material here is, moreover,relevant to some specific problems relating to the particular place of the ancient agora in which it was found: the bigger part of it comes from the main square of the agora, a site for which the archaeological data is somewhat fluid, especially with regard to the earlier phases. (The stratigraphy is disturbed as a result of the continuous use of the area).A wide variety of pots of this type was found in the ancient agora; we encounter examples of mediocre, good and excellent quality (imports) with pure fabric, lustrous glaze and careful motifs, and also some completely degenerated examples, that are mere recollections or poor imitations of the style.The present article attempts a first approach to the subject, laying emphasis on issues relating mainly to the shapes, decoration and production workshops of this category of pottery.A more extensive study in the future will, it is hoped, yield more detailed evidence and sounder conclusion relating to this type of pottery which, in any case, is governed by its own concerns in the area of Macedonia.
