Abstract:
The evidence yielded by the excavations at the ancient town at Toumba, Thessaloniki, points to cult practices.a. There was a sacred area with luxury vessels and a water conduit passing through it.b. A domestic cult was practised, devoted to the Kyrbantes/Korybantes.c. Houses in the settlement had an andron,in which the objects found were connected with banqueting.d. The stone kernos found inside one of the houses attests to the custom of offering ‘the first crops’.e. The terracotta figurine of a deity found in another house points to a belief in the need to protect the inhabitants.
