Abstract:
The present article is a brief presentation of the components from the tiling of a typical house from the city of Rhodes, dating from the late 3rd-early 2nd c. BC. The roof in question is of plain Corinthian type, set above a clay layer. In the first row are restored gutter tiles and pentagonal cover tiles, to lead the rainwater off the roof. The other common tiles (pan-tiles and cover tiles), are of the familiar Hellenistic type, while contracted pan-tiles were used at the junctions between the low sides of the peristyle and the higher stoa. As for the ridges of the roof - at least in the excavated part of the house where no ridge tiles were noted -it is suggested that the partition walls of the house projected to the exterior and that the roof was seated directly on them. Typological examination of the tiles revealed a version of Corinthian pan-tile, a characteristic feature of which is the presence of the imprint of a right hand on the underside, and a broader device for attaching it to the tile above. Tiles of this kind were probably used in a repair of the roof. As is clear, study of the tiling is of assistance in understanding unusual architectural complexes and helps us to restore their form, of which it is an inseparable part.
