Abstract:
The Museums on Small Islands programme of the Ministry of the Aegean supplied the incentive and the means for the creation of an organised archaeological collection open to the public. It forms the nucleus of a small museum covering all periods and is housed in a building in the style of the traditional vernacular architecture of Kasos with some neoclassical elements, which has been declared a protected monument. The building is owned by the Municipality of Kasos and was ceded to the Ministry of Culture for this purpose. It consists of three rooms on the upper storey and two on the semi-basement floor, with a small enclosed courtyard.The archaeological collection of Kasos comprises archaeological finds and objects relating to history and folklore that have mainly been retrieved in the field or handed in by private individuals. Very few are the products of excavations, since there has so far been only limited archaeological investigation of the island.The exhibits, accompanied by texts and visual aids, illustrate all periods of occupation of the island.μοι, Αθήνα 1989, σ. 47-48.L. Susini, Supplemento epigrafico di Caso, Scar- panto, Saro, Calchi, Alimnia e Tilo, ASAtene XLI-XLII (1963-1964), σ. 203-225.The first room on the upper storey is devoted to the prehistoric period on the island and to the sea, the source of its prosperity.The second room contains artefacts relating to cults, sanctuaries, and settlements of historical times, while the third houses finds from the cemeteries of the ancient city in the Late Classical-Early Hellenistic period.The museographical organisation of the rooms in the semi-basement revolves mainly around the tragic events of the slaughter of 1824 and is completed by the presentation of a Kasiot house in the last room.The display was organised by the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies in collaboration with the XXII Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and the Department of Folk Culture. It represents an attempt to use the material remains to reconstitute the lost picture of the past, through the creation of a tangible part of the history of this remote island which, despite its small size, can boast an important culture and role in history.
