An extensive Early Helladic cemetery has been located on the side of a low hill a few metres from the last bay of Asteria, on the Pounda peninsula at Glyphada. It consists of clusters of small chamber tombs with many uses, which were cut into the hard limestone rock and defined on the surface by individual enclosures. A long wall with a zigzag course encloses the cemetery on the side near the sea, from which it is separated by a mere 40 m.A second prehistoric site was noted at the north-east end of the Asteria sports ground, almost in contact with the adjacent coast road. Three of the walls of a rectangular enclosurewere discovered in this area. Traces of use dating from the Early Helladic period were detected on the bedrock inside the enclosure and in the surrounding area, while the enclosure wall appears to have been constructed in the period transitional from Early Helladic to Middle Helladic, with the aim of protecting the workshop activities within the enclosure.In the Late Roman period, a cemetery was created on this site, some of its tombs destroying parts of prehistoric walls. The cemetery was presumably associated with the Early Christian basilica of Glyphada.
