Abstract:
During December 1968 and April 1969 archaeological finds of various epochs but mainly MH were collected from the surface of the hill of Aghios Dimitrios of Palaiokastron ( S.W. and very near to Karpenision ).The MH finds, unusual in the region, are Minyan (fig. 1 and plan 1 ), matt - painted ( ?) pottery (fig. 2 and p 1 a n 2 ) and coarse - ware (fig. 2, 16 ), stone tools and blades of flint and obsidian, bone and clay tools, pieces of stone-querns, two fragments of bored celts, and three arrow-heads (fig. 3 and plan 3, 4).The hill is strategically of great value because, being in the middle of a small valley, it controls the only passage from the valley of the Spercheios to Aetoloacarnania. It is very probable that the hill was inhabited from the MH years until the Byzantine era without interruption.
