A survey on the island of Keos

A survey on the island of Ceos has started in August 1983. The research started from the district of ancient Poieessa (modern Poisses). The wider region is bounded by Kalogeros, Paouras, Panachra, Trachilos, Hellenika, Kato Meria, Ag. Theodores and Liparos. The acropolis of the ancient town is extended on the summit of the westernmost hill ofPhyra in the S. of the valley. The acropolis is surrounded by an outer enclosure with well preserved walls. Walls of inner enclosures and other remains of buldings can be traced, although much damage is caused by the cultivation of the land. The building material consists mainly of local sipolinis, gneiss and schist, with an almost lack of marble. Sherds are found all over the area covering a long period from the 6th c.B.C. to late roman years. Connected with the acropolis must be the site on the south of the Kastellakia bay, where remains of ancient walls can still be seen. There is a dense scatter of black glazed pottery all around.In close connection with the acropolis, on the Northern part of the valley, on the so-called hill of Tourkos, the remains of a tower of defensive character are still visible. At the foot of Tourkos and in a zone from the sea to the church of Ag. Isidores, although there are no architectural remains, a great concentration of sherds of good pottery can be observed.Parts of the walls of a hellenistic tower are preserved at the place of Psaropyrgos in a distance of 2.5 km from Agia Marina. The sherds found in the area belong to hellenistic pottery. Many traces of ancient habitation are preserved at Kato Meria at SE. of Poisses. On the hill N. of the church of Ag. Nikolaos heavy built ancient walls can still be seen. They must belong to a defensice building controlling the paths which connected Poisses and Karthaia. The sherds found in the area belong to classical and roman pottery.
