Abstract:
Excavations at the site of “Kastri,” lying between the communities of Polyneri and Alatopetra in the Prefecture of Grevena, were conducted during the decade 1998/9-2008 during brief periods each year. Despite the considerable difficulties involved - primarily physical and financial - the results of investigation are of great interest. It was very soon determined that the acropolis of an unknown ancient city had been built on this elevated site, which dominated the passageways to the neighboring lands of Epirus, Thessaly, and Macedonia. The acropolis, like the rest of the city, was fortified. Within it there came to light the foundations and architectural members of an important complex of buildings that included a stone temple without columns, a wide Doric stoa, and another large building, creating a four-sided square among them. The foundations of these public buildings must have been laid in the late 4th - early 3rd century B.C.; the destruction of the acropolis in war was dated to the mid-2nd century B.C.The fortification wall with its two large gates surrounding the acropolis, presents a comparable picture. This unknown ancient city is located in the land of the ancient Tymphaians (=Stymphaeans), a part of the kingdom of Macedon; however, it frequently passed into the control of the king of Epirus. We have little information concerning the land of the Tymphaians: they followed Alexander on his campaign in Asia; the general Polyperchon, an important actor in events following Alexander’s death, came from a prominent family in Tymphaia.Continued excavation at Kastri is expected to throw more light on the history and culture of this mountainous region.
