The written word and image are two ways to communicate using different codes. The written language uses symbols of the alphabet, while pictures use the visual code, that is the visual elements and principles of design. An illustrated children’s book uses two different expressive codes (words and pictures),which are in a constant interaction, sometimes agreeing, sometimes adding up on each other’s meaning, other times again clashing or contradicting each other. In the illustrated children’s book text and picture co-exist in independent roles, perhaps complementary or explanatory. It is the picture that rouses the curiosity of young readers helping them to see into the world through the text of their book. The picture helps the young reader to socialize through knowledge and new experiences, stirs up the mental processes and develops language and imagination.
