The importance of Panayotis Michelis’s theoretical work on aesthetic philosophy and the philosophy of art is beyond doubt. Dionysis Zivas has already analyzed accurately the breadth and depth of Michelis’s theoretical and didactic contribution, its systematic and hermeneutical dimensions. The present study addresses the possible timeliness of Michelis’s theory in relation to a central problem that occupies contemporary architectural thought: the problem of space.Space is the new interdisciplinary concept that creates a field of convergence between philosophy, geography, art and architecture, moving beyond the traditional dominance of the category of “form” as the main tool for the analysis and synthesis of architectural and artistic works. The aim of the present study is to re-interpret Michelis’s theoretical work through this contemporary prism of research, using a central hypothesis: that Michelis’s contemplations on “space” have evolved into three distinct but interrelated periods of time, which reflect a dynamic development of different themes and objects of study.During the first period (1936-1940) Michelis lays the initial foundations of his conception of space. The second period (1946-1950) marks his investigation of Byzantine and Modern ideas of space. During the third period (1959-1966) Michelis develops new refinements and further elaborations on the two previous periods, while focusing on the meaning of contemporary artistic and architectural activity. The study concludes by formulating some preliminary suggestions concerning Michelis’s general philosophical worldview that his contemplations of space could imply.
