Ethics and aesthetics : divergences and convergences

In this paper I examine the relation between ethics and aesthetics, using as criteria their constituent elements and their effect on human behaviour. After a referring to N. Hartmann, L. Wittgenstein and G. Lukâcs, I make a special mention of those thinkers who like to present themselves as exponents of the aestheticization of the ethical. I am chiefly occupied with R. Rorty as well as with the criticism levelled at him by R. Shusterman. Examining closely the problems which the subject under discussion arises, I am leading to Aristotle. In Aristotle’s philosophy I find a strong bond between ethics and aesthetics which is largely due to the principles these two disciplines are based on.From the study I made I drew the following conclusions:Ethical life and living aesthetically are not mutually exclusive. The artist must be independent of any aesthetic or moral preoccupation; he must however bear in mind that life is not only variety but unity as well.Ethics and aesthetics have not been the concern of those artists who have no regard for elegance, beauty and uniqueness. However, their actual practice prove that they are no artists but manufacturers. I admit that the artist is in the process of inventing a new language of communication between men; I think, however, that this language will include the words aesthetics and ethics.
