Indifferent voters, indifferent electoral campaign? : an empirical analysis of the 2000 parliamentary elections

The first part of this article outlines the basic theoretical concepts in the fields of electioneering and television, starting from the early sixties up until the most recent developments, and examines their relation with the transformation of the European electorate. In the second part, drawing on evidence from opinion polls conducted during the campaigns for the parliamentary elections of 1996 and 2000, we attempt to explore the impact of the April 2000 electoral campaign. We address the key questions of the interrelation between interest in the campaign, time of vote decision and media attendance, focusing on the issue of television and its impact on different groups of the electorate.
