Abstract:
The ancient theatre of Vergina is quite a well-known monument on the site of the ancient city of Aigai. Minor work on this major theatrical structure provided an opportunity for fresh observations relating both to the monument itself and to its relationship with the surrounding area and the Palace. The natural features of the site were drawn, and a better understanding was gained of the building solutions which structured the theatre in relation to the parodoi. Particularly interesting was its relationship with the large edifice of the palace to the S of, and higher than, the theatre, because the area in between seems to have undergone some kind of architectural organisation. All these features reveal the importance of the urban complex on the W side of the ancient city, because the theatre linked the palace, the ruler’s seat, with the political agora, which was also the site of the sanctuary of Eukleia, all distinctive features of the ancient city.
