Archaeological evidence from Nea Kallikratia in Halkidiki
Abstract:
The construction and installation of the sewage system in the village of Nea Kallikratia in Halkidiki revealed, and necessitated the rescue excavation of, parts of an ancient settlement, not mentioned in archaeological reports hitherto, a short distance to the W of the prehistoric mound. Part of its seaward fortifications was uncovered, together with private and public buildings and deposits. The settlement was founded in the Late Archaic period and destroyed in the mid-4th century BC. In the extensive cemetery, 78 graves were excavated, dating from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity. The graves of the Classical period seem be connected with the ancient settlement which has been located and excavated. It is impossible to identify it for the time being, owing to a lack of epigraphical data.
