The 16th Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities continued investigating the ancient cemetery at Souroti this year. Of the 43 graves investigated, only 5 had no burial offerings. It is important to note the wide timespan which they cover. The cemetery was in constant use from the 6th century BC to the Hellenistic period. The investigations to date show that only one method of burial, inhumation, was used here, mainly in pit-graves, but also in cist-graves and tile-graves.The ancient settlement at Souroti, whch has been linked with the cemetery, lies to the SE of it on a row of hills. It is part of a group of numerous settlements of the prehistoric and historical periods N and S of the River Anthemous.The variety and abundance of the grave goods indicate the presence of some form of socially stratified “urban” entity with organised links with southern Greece, both Attica and Corinth, as early as the 6th century BC. It seems to have maintained especially close links with its own surrounding region, particularly Olynthos in Chalkidike. The handmade pottery found in the exterior fill of the graves indicates that this “urban” entity existed well before the 6th century BC and continued until the end of the 2nd century BC.
