Abstract:
Owing to scheduled work on the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway, in 2000 and 2001 excavations were carried out on the stretch of the route between Makri- yalos and Katerini.i. At the Makriyalos junction an irrigation channel and part of a farm of the Roman period were investigated.ii. At Toumbes near Korinos, directly to the S of the large burial mound with the so-called Macedonian tomb of Pydna, excavations on the route of a relief road of the national highway produced evidence of Bronze Age habitation and graves of the Bronze Age and Classical and Roman periods.iii. On the relief roads at Krania near Korinos part of a settlement of the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic period was investigated. The finds were mainly workshops (a pottery and a smithy), which ceased to be used early in the 3rd century BC, probably when Brennus and his Gauls moved down into Central Greece. In 2001, the 16th Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities also carried out some minor rescue excavations, which nonetheless located a wealth of movable finds at the following sites.i. Makriyalos. Plot 951, where excavation continued in the N cemetery of Pydna with numerous graves of the first half of the 4th century BC.ii. Alykes near Kitros. Plot owned by K. Hryssohoi'dis. In the S cemetery of Pydna a cist was investigated which contained a cinerary urn in the form of a bronze hydria decorated with a representation of Eros of the handle.iii. At Revenia near Korinos, test trenches on the scheduled site of a light industrial unit located an extensive Early Neolithic settlement.
