The excavation of a late roman - early christian cemetery at Kleidi in the Fiorina prefecture

In the autumn of 2006 a salvage excavation was carried out on part of a cemetery from the Late Roman-Early Christian era near the village of Kleidi in the Fiorina Prefecture, within the bounds of a lignite mine. The adjacent settlement lay at the northern end of the Kleidi Pass and next to the Via Egnatia, which ran through the pass. An examination of the surface pottery indicates that the settlement was inhabited from the Roman period up until the post-Byzantine era. The excavation consisted of a single trench (B3), measuring 20x20 m., which uncovered 15 graves, twelve of them pit-graves and the other three cist-graves. Seven pits were also unearthed. The dead had been laid in the graves with a N-S orientation. The graves contained a wealth of grave goods, the most notable of which are some clay trefoilmouthed oinochoae, various pieces of bronze jewellery and a number of bronze coins. Collectively, the finds indicate that this part of the cemetery was in use from the mid- 3rd until the mid-4th cent. AD.
