Abstract:
Owing to a small-scale technical work at the south entrance to the city of Véroia, investigations were carried out into two clusters of graves, which date from the late 5th to the late 4th cent. BC. The oldest of these (late 5th -mid-4th cent. BC) contains 10 burial pits and the latest (mid-4th - late 4th cent. BC) 11 pits. All of the pit-graves bore wooden covers -except for one, which was formed out of a natural cavity- and contained individual burials. The two groups of graves display differences in terms of constructional detail, burial customs and the types of grave goods placed either within the graves or on top of their wooden covers: shortly after the middle of the 4th cent. BC the graves were laid out on an E-W axis, while up until the middle of that century they had a N-S orientation. Similarly, the clay vases in the older cluster of tombs, of which the most representative types are black-glazed skyphoi and exaleiptra, differ from the vases in the later cluster in terms of their relationship with Athenian pottery and local production, with the vases in the latter group appearing to foreshadow the typical pottery of the Hellenistic era.
