Abstract:
A group of Late Neolithic decorated sherds from Toumpa of Polyplatanos in Imathia (W. Macedonia, Greece), divided in four categories according to the decorative style, is studied in a non destructive way, using micro x-rays fluorescence (μ- XRF) technique. The analysis of the material revealed the elemental composition of the decorative paints as well as of the clays. It is demonstrated that certain elements such as calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) are of great importance for the physical appearance of the material such as the color and are characterized as primary elements, presenting significant variations. Other secondary elements such as potassium (K), titanium (Ti), silica (Si), chrome (Cr) and nickel (Ni) are also determined, affecting in a limited way the physical properties of the material. Possible raw materials for the preparation of the paints are proposed and the clays of the samples are compared, giving information concerning the provenance of the shards. Finally, stylistic differences and physical characteristics are experimentally validated and explained, completing and expanding in a reliable way the archaeological information of this material.
