Late antiquity building complex at the site of Molos, Abdera : initial presentation

In the area of Molos, 2 kilometers northeast of the Roman city of Abdera, buildings dating to the period of Late Antiquity were excavated and attributed to a farmhouse (site: 91.02). The remains have not been fully revealed, and this presentation has a preliminary character.There were three (3) buildings, occupying a total built-up area of 563 m2. Buildings A and C (Γ) had triclinia around which a large number of glass win- dowpane fragments have been found. There was a bath in the northeast corner of Building A. Building B, which consisted of a single space, operated as either a stable or a storeroom. The architectural evidence clearly indicates that there were at least two building phases.To date, only a very small number of portable objects have been found, from among which we may note a marble incense-burner with a votive inscription to Zeus Hypsistos, and glass cups. The pottery for the most part consists of unglazed daily wares. The coins are exceptionally few in number. The form of the triclinia, the extensive employment of glass panes, and the portable finds place the construction and use of the complex between the late 4th and early 6th centuries A.D. A second habitation period has been found during the 11th and 12th centuries.In the immediate area of these buildings, there are archaeological remains at four locations. Connecting them directly with one another remains for the time being difficult due to the limited evidence at our disposal. However, the area was densely-inhabited during Late Antiquity and the Middle Byzantine period.
