Abstract:
Ongoing investigation at the Neolithic settlement of Thermi in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki revealed a new section of phase ΘΕ2, dated to the LN la, which has been disturbed by burials dating to the historical period. The burials covered a wide chronological range. Beneath the surface layer, a group of burials dating to the Late Ottoman period were found, following upon a scattering of graves of the Roman, Hellenistic, and Archaic periods that had been opened up in the Neolithic fill. The remains of Neolithic habitation consisted of a group of pits of various sizes, forming wide cavities. Their chronological connection was not always clear; however, there was evidence to indicate that they were not all contemporary. All the pits were dug out of the natural clay earth, and their fill consisted of grayish soil. An irregular stone pavement covered the fill in some of the pits near their floors. The pavement layer and those beneath it contained the largest number of finds, i.e. pottery and a few small finds, among which we may single out fragments from many pyramidal clay objects, which to date have been identified as “spit supports” in the bibliography. Characteristic pottery categories include black and brown burnished wares, and white-painted pottery with fine red linear decoration. The settlement may be dated on the basis of these categories, which have already been found in previous exploration.
