Abstract:
With the collaboration of a large group of colleagues, and with financial support from the European program Interreg III, the project to upgrade and enhance the archaeological site of Edessa continued in 2007, specifically in areas 1-15, to the right of the main road (Fig. 1). The excavation data had been gathered previously, and from among these we present those connected with the Early Christian period.Areas 1, 4, 1A and 1Γ, directly right of the South gate, comprise a whole in contact with the wall; they were probably military barracks. It appears that areas 7, 8, and 9 were built concurrently atop a limestonestratum. In the next group of buildings, north of the first right-hand passage, area 2 must have operated as a shop, while the oblong area 6 served to communicate with the first right-hand passage of areas 12-14. The pipe in 13 is evidence that this area was open on its southern part, while on its northern side it must have had a balcony and stairs leading to the second floor. The unexpected discovery of 2007 was that of furnaces from a glass workshop in the 3rd space to the right, investigation of which was postponed for want of funds, so that it could be carried out together with the conservation study.
