Abstract:
With steady funding from the Prefecture of Grevena and the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki continued its excavation at Kastri near Polyneri in Grevena prefecture (under the supervision of S. Drougou).Although difficult weather conditions made it impossible to conduct extensive excavations, a number of new data confirm observations already made and fill out the picture of the as yet unknown ancient city of Tymphaea. We identified dense development on the large embankment of the acropolis, as we began to uncover large buildings W. of the temple and on the E. side of the large plateau. The stretches of the wall uncovered so far indicate that it was very strong and followed the configuration of the elevation. The most outstanding building is the Doric S. stoa, the remains of which are constantly coming to light and betoken an impressive composite edifice with a Doric stoa along the N. side. This building was probably a monumental propylon of the sanctuary, lending the space the characteristic “theatricality” of Hellenistic architecture. It was confirmed that the acropolis was destroyed in the mid-2nd century BC after a devastating battle. The excavation continues, and at the same time we are planning to organise and develop the site to make it accessible to visitors.
