Decorated pottery from neolithic Polyplatanos : preliminary observations

The Neolithic settlement at Polyplatanos, Imathia prefecture, is located 12 km NE of Naoussa and 24 km N. of Veria. It is on a tell with gently sloping sides covering an area of about 8 ha and 4.25 m high at the summit (28 m above sea level). Three occupation phases have been uncovered so far, but we have most information about the upper phase (Polyplatanos I). Amended radio-dating puts occupation at the end of the Late Neolithic, in the mid-5th millennium BC.The paper starts by presenting problems connected with recording the archaeological material. It then presents data relating to the decorated pottery, which represents no more than 1.5 per cent of the total amount of pottery. It consists of sherds of Fine Ware decorated in various styles. In the sample presented, Crusted Ware and Cream-on-Red Burnished Ware predominate, while Classic Dimini, Black-on-Red, Incised, White-on-Black Burnished, Black-Topped, and other wares are represented to a limited extent. The Crusted Ware is made of very pure, fine clay and has very thin walls (5 mm). The types of vessels with crusted decoration are a shallow hemispherical bowl and pedestals. The only evidence so far is that the decoration was applied in the area of the rim or the base of the vessel in the form of a kind of band. Other motifs have not been identified on the pottery from Polyplatanos. It seems likely that Crusted Ware was used to contain dry foodstuffs, as the decoration is too delicate for wet goods.
