Vergina 2002 : images of Aegae

In the last 2 years, good fortune has twice put in archaeologists’ hands the image of a goat on cheap material, in the forni of goat’s-head stamps on fragments of clay roof-tiles. This is the first time we have seen this charming motif on roof-files, as all the stamps found at Vergina hitherto bore different motifs. The 2 fragments with the goat’s head bring to mind earlier finds and myths connected with the founding of Aegae, the Macedonians’ old capital and the beginning of the royal house of the Temenids.In 1996, a silver coin stamped with the bust of a goat dating to Alexander I’s reign ‘c.480 BC’ was unearthed not far from the Metroön of Vergina. Alexander I adopted the motif of a goat for his coins in allusion to the myths concerning his ancestry.The myth continue to be alluded to by an image, which was stamped even on cheap objects, like clay roof-tiles, leaving a clear token of the city of Aegae.Roofing projects and studies for the development of specific monuments (such as shelters over tombs and the mise en valeur of the theatre) are now among the chief concerns of the excavation, alongside the research.
