Excavation in the west cemetery of Archondiko near Pella in 2002
Abstract:
Excavation of the W. cemetery of the ancient settlement at Arhondiko continued in 2002, with investigations in parts of fields 4569 (owned by N. Taousanidis) and 4569 (owned by S. Papastavroudis and G. Tsolakidis). A total of 85 graves were explored, dating, as in previous years, to the Iron Age and the Archaic, Classical, and Early Hellenistic periods. The 24 pit-graves and cist-graves of the Iron Age contained single burials accompanied by a few types of vessels and a very small amount of jewellery. A male burial accompanied by an iron sword was investigated for the first time. We investigated 17 burials of the Classical and Early Hellenistic periods, of which 11 were female and 6 male. The grave goods consisted of a limited amount of jewellery, busts of deities, repeated types of clay vessels (two-handled Boisai skyphoi, skyphidia, kantharos, and pelike), and bronze coins of Philip II, Alexander III, and Cassander. The other 44 burials of the Archaic period reflect the demographic revival of the settlement at that time. A number of these stand out for their large number of burial offerings: the grave of a little girl in T197; the female burials in T198, T221, and T233; and the warrior burials in T157, T189, T239, and T194.
