Abstract:
During archaeological excavations in the Poliyirinos building plot in insula 40 in Souroti in the municipality of Vassilika, 29 graves were located, most of them pit- graves hewn out of the bedrock. There were also a few cist-graves and an isolated tile-grave.Of the 29 graves investigated, 20 may be quite firmly dated to the Archaic period and 5 to the Late Classical or Early Hellenistic period. In the cases of the Archaic graves, the dead were accompanied by vessels mainly from local Macedonian pottery workshops. Regarding the jewellery deposited as burial offerings, a preference was noted for bronze (bracelets, earrings, finger-rings, fusiform beads, and crossbow fibulae). The presence of eye beads and zoomorphic figurines was limited. In the graves of the 4th century and the Early Hellenistic period, the burial offerings were limited and stereotypical, being black-glazed kantharoi, type A black- glazed skyphoi, and black-glazed skyphidia, accompanied by bronze coins (of Per- diccas III and Alexander III).The pottery from Souroti is distinguished by its conservatism. Manufactured in the workshops of the interior, it presents similarities with the pottery from Olynthos in terms of shapes and decoration. The site of the ancient settlement at Souroti is located at a nodal point on the shortest overland route between Therme and Olynthos. It is therefore implicated in the debate over the identification of Strepsa and Anthemous.
