Abstract:
In the five years since it began, the university-run excavation at Kastri near Polyneri and Alatopetra in the municipality of Ziakas has produced finds that confirm archaeologists’ initial perception of the importance of the site. Despite the extensive destruction of the architectural remains, the important structures on the curved plateau on the elevation are now visible. They represent parts of a sanctuary (the west naos, the Doric stoa, the main building), together with the peribolos of the acropolis and the city wall. The main discovery in the last year has been the impressive monumental north-west gate in the wall, an opening 5 m wide and 7 m long. The wall is 2.70 m thick. The name of the ancient city and the name of the deity to whom the sanctuary on the acropolis was dedicated remain unknown; but the progress of the excavation allows us to be optimistic that the investigations will be fruitful and that there will be more finds like the one on top of the acropolis.
