Mining and metal-working in ancient Kea

A study of mining and metal - working by the ancient Keians has been organised within the framework of a broad program of archaeological surface survey of Kea. This aspect of the study was undertaken on the basis of the ancient literary sources and isncriptions which refer to the extraction and distribution of miltos, an iron oxide, and following reports of early travellers who mention galena mines.Located during the course of the surface survey, were extensive galeries for the mining of miltos and iron ore at a number of places in the island. Trial galeries and a great deal of galena were found at Platy Gialos and Pharos in Petrousa. Copper slag is to be found in considerable quantity in the area of Ayios Simeon. Musch slag has been found over the entire area of Helleni- ka in the centre of the island. This is awaiting analysis.The general program of research on early mining and metal - working in Kea aims at finding, among other things, the reason for the striking prosperity of the island in antiquity. An aspect likewise under investigation is the orientation and marked specialisation of the Kean economy in the production of dyes, both organic and inogranic.

Ή έρευνα τών παλαιομεταλλευτικών καί παλαιομεταλλουργικών δραστηριοτήτων στήν Κέα διεξάγεται, στά πλαίσια ένός ευρύτερου προγράμματος έπκρανειακής έρευνας στή νοτιοανατολική Κέα άπό διεπιστημονική όμάδα, άπό τούς R. Jones, Έ. Φώτου-Jones (Fitch Laboratory, 'Αγγλική 'Αρχαιολογική Σχολή Αθηνών), Ν. Μπελογιάννη (’Ινστιτούτο Λίθου ΥΠ.ΠΟ.), Λ. Γ. Μενδώνη (Κ.Ε.Ρ.Α./Ε.Ι.Ε.), μέ τή συνεργασία τών Μ. E. Cackey καί Α. Παπασταματάκη., Ενώ τό άρθρο αύτό βρισκόταν σέ προχωρημένο στάδιο στό τυπογραφείο, κυκλοφόρησε το βιβλίο τών J. Ε. Cherry - J. L. Davis - Ε. Mantzourani, Landscape Archaeology as Long- Term History, Momumenta Archaeologica 16 (Los Angeles 1991), τό κεφάλαιο 14 του όποιου, άναφέρεται στήν παραγωγή μίλτου στήν Κέα, “Miltos and Metallurgical Extraction”, 299-304
