Excavations in the byzantine cemetery of Veroia

Abstract:
Sections of the city’s Byzantine cemetery were found during salvage excavations (OT 106, 107) just outside the south-west city wall. The Trochopoulos site yielded the south-east part of an unknown Byzantine church, which the archaeological evidence suggests may date to the late 13th or early 14th c. South of the church an extensive cemetery was excavated with 45 burials at two levels. The upper level, which corresponds to the period when the nearby cemetery church was in use, consists of tile-graves, none with burial offerings. The earlier burials in the lower level are simple pit-graves, their occupants usually accompanied by jewellery (earrings, finger-rings, necklaces, and armlets) that points to a dating for the cemetery in at least the 10th c.Investigations in the Byzantine cemetery further north, in the Tsakiridis site, yielded 31 burials on two levels. Most of the graves are pit-graves, with four tile- graves and one cist-grave. The jewellery (earrings, armlets, and finger-rings) worn by quite a number of the occupants is especially important for dating the cemetery and suggests that it was used between the 10th and the 13th c.The excavation of Byzantine graves in the area outside the south-west wall suggests that Veria’s Byzantine cemeteries were probably concentrated outside the south-west wall, which is also the site of the city’s extra muros cemetery church. This offers compelling evidence that the population of the Byzantine castle had probably begun to withdraw towards the higher parts of the city. In this period the lower part of the city may have been fortified with a new defensive wall, part of which was located by Fotis Petsas in 1967. This hypothesis can be confirmed or disproved only by excavation of the sites where it is expected that the continuation of the wall in Bizaniou Street will be located.
