A cluster of archaic graves at Veria and new data relating to the town’s early habitation phases

Abstract:
Prior to work by the municipal authority, a cluster of 11 Archaic graves were excavated in Monastiriou Street, Veria, supplementing our scant picture of the town’s early habitation phases. This paper presents the clay grave goods from three of the graves. All the graves contained local and imported wares, which, furthermore, offer a firm dating for the grave groups. The imported pottery includes Attic, Corinthian, and East Ionian vessels; also of interest are the figurines and the anthropomorphic vase, which also come from Ionia. The graves in Monastiriou Street are all in the area where a few fragmentarily surviving graves were excavated ten years ago, offering the first, albeit fragmentary, data about the Archaic period in Veria. The recently investigated graves give a fuller picture: we can now talk about an Archaic cemetery in Veria, in the area which has in fact yielded the earliest finds to date (Early Iron Age burials) and where one of the city’s extensive cemeteries was located in the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. On the basis of all the data relating to the Archaic and the Classical period in Veria, the paper then seeks to reconstruct the ekistic model (habitation in villages) before Veria developed into the splendid city of the Hellenistic period.
